Widewath Farm

Widewath Farm is set in a secluded location with panoramic views across the Lowther Valley and beyond. It is only 15 minutes from the M6 and the market town of Penrith. The picturesque villages of Askham and Bampton are within 2 miles with a selection of pubs, village shops and even a heated outdoor swimming pool! The Farm is situated in the quieter eastern area of the Lake District National Park, within a stone's throw of the quite different Eden Valley. It benefits from the best of both worlds; venture up the bridleway onto High Street (roman road) and the wide open fell and mountainous terrain of the Lake District or drop down into the extensive network of footpaths and bridleways and quiet country lanes of the sheltered Eden Valley.

We've lived at Widewath with our two sons for 13 years now. There's evidence of occupation here from the 1500s! The place is steeped in history with an old packhorse lane leading down to packhorse bridges, past a ruined farm steading and out onto the fell towards Widewath Mill.

Widewath Farm is a traditional upland hill farm.  We farm a hefted flock of native hardy Swaledales on the surrounding heather clad fells of Askham & Helton and Bampton commons. The ewes are crossed with a Leicester tup to produce mules with the females being sold to farmers on lower ground. Some are kept at Widewath and crossed with a texel tup to produce tasty fat lambs!! There's also Smudge the pony, Mini and her daughter Maggie and Izzie the busy terriers, farm collies and free range hens producing lovely eggs!!
